HANDGUN SAFETY
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE APPLICATION AND UNDERSTAND IT
The SRGC handgun safety class takes a maximum of 12 students per month and will be held if we have a minimum of 6 students. This ensures we have adequate one on one coaching staff for the live fire portion. Registration closes by the 17th of each month. You will be notified by the scheduling coordinator if class is cancelled and given the option of taking the next available class.
Thank you for your interest in the handgun safety class offered by the Siuslaw Rod & Gun Club (SRGC) and Florence Police Department. (FPD) The information presented during this class is beneficial for all levels of experience with firearms however it is primarily presented to a beginner shooter. A safety class is required prior to applying for a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) in Oregon. This class meets the guidelines set forth by the State of Oregon in ORS 166.291.
You must be at least 21 years of age and not convicted of a felony to apply for a CHL at the Sheriff’s office in the county where you live. However, you may still take the class if under 21 and have not been convicted of a felony to receive a certificate if you pass. If under 18, your parent or guardian must accompany you to the class and sign the waiver of liability.
You are an officially registered attendee only after you receive a CONFIRMATION EMAIL and instructions from the HGSC Scheduling Coordinator. Once you have been confirmed for a class, your fee is non-refundable.
If something comes up and you are unable to attend, please notify us at HGSCSRGC@gmail.com. We will reschedule you for another class.

Required: Basic Handgun Safety Class & Certificate $40.00 plus a $2 processing fee for Members and $50.00 plus a $2 processing fee for Non-members.
Optional: NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Book $25.00
Date/Time: 9:00am to 4:00pm. Choose the preferred class date on registration form.
Location: SRGC Clubhouse, 87227 Munsel Lake Road, Florence .
Directions: At the north end of Florence, turn east onto Munsel Lake Rd., off HWY 101, north of the Fred Meyer store. Drive east on Munsel Lake Road .5 mile and turn left through the gate at the Rod and Gun Club entrance (just past the sign). The clubhouse is at the top of a small hill on the right.
Parking: There is ample parking in the club parking lot and parking for the disabled is adjacent to the clubhouse.
Please arrive 15 minutes early to confirm registration and have your handgun safety checked.
Bring the handgun you wish to use for the class.
- If you do not have a handgun, or would like to try something new, there are handguns available to rent for a fee of $15.00. If you are applying for your Concealed Handgun Licence please bring the gun you plan to use for Concealed Carry.
- Please be sure your handgun is in good working order AND CLEAN. Note: Brand new firearms need to be cleaned before use.
- Bring 5O rounds of ammunition of the same caliber as the handgun you bring.
- If you do not have ammunition, some limited supplies are available, sold at market value. If you would like to purchase ammunition for use during the class, please note this on the form.
Upon arrival at the clubhouse:
LEAVE THE AMMUNITION IN YOUR VEHICLE and bring your UNLOADED HANDGUN to the classroom for a safety check.
- What to expect:
Approximately four hours of classroom instruction with a 30-minute lunch break. We suggest you bring a lunch; a refrigerator and soft drink machine are available at the clubhouse. - “One on one” coaching on the pistol range. Each student will have an assigned coach and all firing will be done under close supervision and “on command”. Eye and ear protection will be provided if you don’t have your own. Shooters are encouraged to purchase eye and ear protection and use them any time firearms are being used in their vicinity.
- Class will be held rain or shine. The firing line is covered and protected from rain and sun. We recommend that you dress in layers with closed toe shoes, long sleeves, high collared shirts and a billed hat (ex. baseball cap) that offers protection from hot brass.
- Please bring something to eat for a lunch break.
